Proposal to impose house tax in Chandigarh criticised

‘Housing Board funds are not being used for development’
‘Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has fixed deposits worth Rs.500 crore’
‘BJP if voted to power would not levy any tax on residential buildings’

CHANDIGARH: The BJP candidate for the lone Lok Sabha seat from Chandigarh, Satya Pal Jain, on Thursday criticised the Chandigarh Administration’s proposal to impose house tax on residential properties in the City Beautiful on the recommendations of the Finance Commission.
Talking to media persons, Mr. Jain said there was no need to impose house tax on residential properties as the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation had fixed deposits worth Rs.500 crore in its bank account.
He said the Chandigarh Housing Board had a cash balance of Rs.300 crore and alleged that these funds were not being used for development of Chandigarh. “These funds have come from the common man by way of taxes or from sale of real estate assets and should have been used for development of the city as the Chandigarh Administration or Municipal Corporation or any government body is not expected to behave as a capitalist who is working for earning profits,” he said questioning the “wisdom of raising the tax burden of the citizen without using the available funds”.
He asserted that on coming to power the BJP would not levy any tax on residential buildings. ...
