“Should a government that has caused inflation, been soft on terrorism, hurt religious sentiments by negating the existence of Lord Rama and believes in dynastic politics stay in power?” As senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj posed this question to the crowd, a resounding ‘no’ filled the air at Rally Ground in Sector 25 on Saturday.
In the city to address a rally in favour of BJP candidate Satya Pal Jain, Swaraj seems to have struck a chord with the audience as the gathering applauded her statements and raised slogans.
“The UPA government had stated that it would work for the common man. However, they have just taken out money of their pockets and snatched food from their mouths,” she said.
The BJP leader added: “The Centre abolished POTA, a stringent law against terrorism, stating it to be anti-Muslim. The law was anti-criminals and not anti-Muslim. The Congress is giving a communal colour to terrorism. They should realise that terrorists are neither Hindu nor Muslim. They have no religion. It was only after the Mumbai attacks that the government woke up to the need to have a law but the essence of POTA was missing.”
Swaraj also slammed the Congress party for questioning the existence of Lord Rama and hurting people’s religious sentiments. Amid cries of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ from the audience, Swaraj said the government has no right to issue such statements.
She also asked the youth not to get misled by the stress that the government claims it lays on youth power. “All youth leaders of Congress belong to one dynasty or the other,” she remarked.
Mocking Nehru-Gandhi scion Rahul Gandhi, Swaraj said he is trying to learn about the poor by going to their houses in villages but has not seen the shades of village life.
Readying the pitch for BJP candidate from the city Satya Pal Jain, the senior leader said he (Jain) has risen from the grassroots and is aware of the problems of the people.
Addressing the gathering, Jain said the Congress-led UPA government had failed to fulfill its promises. “No development has taken place in the city. No IIT or IIM was started here. The SC certificates have still not been issued. When voted to power, we will bring the Metro to the city, apart from constructing flyovers and multi-storey parking lots,” he said.
BJP National Secretary Kiran Ghai, meanwhile, called the UPA coalition an “opportunistic” one. She also urged residents to exercise their franchise on May 13.
The party also made an attempt to woo Sikh voters as Akali leader Gurpratap Riar brought up the issue of anti-Sikh riots and said no justice had been administered under the Congress.
President of the party city unit Kamla Sharma, former Mayor Harjinder Kaur and other senior leaders also addressed the rally.
