CHANDIGARH: Jains will celebrate birthday of the 24th Tirthankara and founder of Jainism, Vardhman Mahavir, on Tuesday.
The 2,608th birth anniversary, falling on April 7 according to Gregorian calendar, will be celebrated at Digambar Jain temple here. The relevance of non-violence, vegetarianism and other teachings will reportedly be stressed upon on the occasion. Former Chandigarh MP Satyapal Jain said: ‘Jain teachings are relevant and more so, even from all scientific points of view. Mahavir said non-violence was the only way to resolve any issue. While only a fraction of the population indulges in violence, it won’t be difficult for those who do to overcome this debilitating emotion if they follow Jain ideals.’ ...
