Blogs have emerged as a strong platform for candidates to express their opinion on current issues, enabling a candidate to tap the youth, especially, college and university students who are preoccupied with exams at this time.
Congress candidate Pawan Bansal and BJP candidate Satya Pal Jain have used their blogs effectively to grab the attention of young voters. They stick to topics that generate a debate among readers and show that they are on the same wavelength.

BJP's Jain has used his blog to focus on more immediate issues affecting the life of city residents ? multi-level parking, electricity problem, Chandigarh as an educational hub, Metro rail, provision of additional floors in residential, commercial and industrial buildings, 3.5% share of Chandigarh in BBMB project and traffic and housing problem in the city. ...
...Jain who had used his website in the last election, said blog is a good medium to communicate with voters as the main thrust of candidates is to communicate and interact with voter. Moreover, the voters provide valuable suggestions and good feedback.

Electoral battle shifts to the blogosphere

Chandigarh Newsline
Apr 24, 2009 Chandigarh: New-age communication techniques have made inroads into canvassing methods as well — the latest addition to the arsenal is blogging.

To actively woo the youth, the candidates have taken to posting regular updates of their views on various issues — discussions range from the Rent Act to the sitcom Friends — on the Internet.

On the flip side, the candidates too get ample feedback on what the electorate wants.

Congress candidate Pawan Kumar Bansal’s blog (pawanbansalforchd.com) airs his opinion on alternate career options and opportunities for the youth, luxury brands as well as the launch of Nano while BJP candidate Satya Pal Jain (blog.satyapaljain.com) puts across his views on education, additional storeys in all buildings and the introduction of Metro services in the city.

Residents are also free to express diverse views on all issues under the sun. A resident advocates that brain drain from the city be stemmed by ensuring that lucrative jobs are available in the city.

The traffic problem and the need for more parking spaces is another issue of debate. “I face a lot of problems while commuting in the city. The road dividing Sectors 35 and 22 is mostly packed. I think the advent of the Metro will ease the situation and make Chandigarh pollution free,” comments a blogger Richa.

Improving tourism, preventing illegal construction around the Sukhna Lake and bringing unutilised land in IT Park under good use are also on the priority list of the bloggers.

The youngsters, not satisfied by just the candidates’ comments also want to know the logic behind their views and how they plan to achieve their promise.

The famous tagline of Friends “I’ll be there for you” just took on a new meaning for the youth.

Netas on people track, not e-path

The Times of India
CHANDIGARH: In this age of quick information dissemination, political parties have been increasingly opting for e-campaigning, but in the city,
where the distances are not much and people easier to reach, most contenders feel there’s no substitute for people-to-people contact.
... . However, it’s BJP candidate Satya Pal Jain who is all for e-campaigning to reach his voters, perhaps given the party’s largely urban base. Jain, who has a blog, updates his entries and answers queries of his voters. According to BJP media-incharge Kehar Singh Kaundal, “Jain makes it a point to read every query of his voters on the blog everyday and to answer it,” said Kaundal.
