30 Apr 2009, CHANDIGARH: With few days left for polling, those in the fray are using blogs, e-mails and SMSes to reach out to voters, especially the youth।Candidates are trekking the online path to reach out to people who are unlikely to attend rallies or other public meetings.
Blogs have emerged as a strong platform for candidates to express their opinion on current issues, enabling a candidate to tap the youth, especially, college and university students who are preoccupied with exams at this time.
Congress candidate Pawan Bansal and BJP candidate Satya Pal Jain have used their blogs effectively to grab the attention of young voters. They stick to topics that generate a debate among readers and show that they are on the same wavelength.

Cong battles sticky price issue

30 Apr 2009, CHANDIGARH: The Congress is increasingly finding it tough to explain spiralling food prices as the issue looks set to top the poll agenda ofvoters. In an indication of how the household budget is getting affected is the rise of sugar rate to Rs 29 a kg from Rs 22 in just a month!
It is the same story with the ubiquitous potato which now costs Rs 15 a kg against Rs 10 last week. Similarly, tomatoes shot up to Rs 15 from Rs 10 per kg in the last 15 days.
’’It is ridiculous that rates of most essential commodities have gone up. Right from vegetables to fruits, cooking oil and wheat, there is a hike in almost everything,’’ fumed Lovinder Kaur, a homemaker.
Isha Jawa also has the same grouse. ‘’Skyrocketing rates of sugar, rice, pulses and wheat have certainly made a hole in the pocket of the middle and lower middle-class. This can even tilt fortunes of some candidates, especially those from the ruling party.’’
Facing a lot of uncomfortable questions from the electorate, Congress tries defending itself by attributing the economic changes to various factors that are reportedly beyond their control. However, calling it a transitory phenomenon, former Chandigarh mayor and senior Congresssman Pardeep Chhabra said, ‘’I don’t think the present rise in prices can affect prospects of a candidate or government in a big way. It’s a temporary phase which will soon vanish from the scene.’’
This has, though, given ready fodder to the opposition when in less than a fortnight residents will seal the fate of city politicians at the hustings on May 13. Seeking an answer for the common man, BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from UT, Satya Pal Jain, said, ‘’Why can’t Congress curb peaking prices of essential commodities. It can’t run away from responsibilities when household items like sugar, kerosene, wheat, rice and vegetables have gone beyond the reach of common man.’’
According to BSP candidate Harmohan Dhawan, ‘’People are fed up and will definitely vote against the ruling Congress this time.’’
Trying to give the present scenario a logical angle, a leading vegetable wholesale dealer, Deepak Dhawan, said, ‘’The main reason of retail prices going up is a short supply of commodities from markets in the region. Most vegetables like potatoes and onions and fruits like apples and oranges have been coming from cold storage as it’s the off-season now and, hence, the high rates.’’
And in news that won’t be music to ears of city residents and the ruling party but seemingly melodious to rival groups is what Deepak added to conclude: ‘’Rates of most veggies and fruits are going to be still higher as local markets are fast exhausting their stocks.’’

BJP candidate for Chandigarh Lok Sabha constituency Mr Satya Pal Jain appealed to the wise and educated citizens of Chandigarh to vote decisively and get rid of the five year misrule of the Congress party. He said time has come to get rid of those who have been dishing out false promises and excuses for the entire five year term of the present Lok Sabha. Jain said no MP from Chandigarh in the last 45 years has been as helpless and as the present one.
He said the Congress MP, drunk on power and wealth, has not been able to get any of the problems of Chandigarh solved. If you have an MP who is a minister in the centre and still he says that officers do not listen to him; whose government is full of corruption and whose administration is behaving like a property dealer; he has no moral right to seek your vote again. Mr Jain held the Congress MP and union government minister fully responsible for all excesses, corruption and demolitions in the city over the last five years.
Addressing public meetings in sector 40, 18 and 26 Mr Jain said he is committed to all-round development of Chandigarh . He performed padyatra in sector 30 for two hours this morning and went round seeking votes from door to door. In sector 30 he was accorded warm welcome by the people who garlanded him, distributed sweets and assured full support to him. A large number of women applied tilak to Mr Jain. In the evening Mr Jain performed padyatra in sector 34 market and furniture market where he was weighed against coins.
In a public meeting held in sector 40 Mr Jain said BJP does not believe in empty or false promises. Whatever we promise, we shall deliver and in the next election we shall ask for your votes on the basis of our performance. Congress has played fraud on the people and the people of Chandigarh will punish it this time. Mr Jain said that to ensure that youth of Chandigarh get more jobs BJP, on coming to power in the centre, will formulate a new employment policy for Chandigarh . Job oriented industry will be encouraged in Chandigarh and new projects will be brought to Chandigarh . To ensure that every citizen can contribute to the development of Chandigarh , peoples participation in the process of development.
Mr Jain said a helpline will be established to ensure that senior citizens get health and other needed facilities. Four CGHS dispensaries will be established in various sectors of the city to ensure that retired and serving central government employees get health facilities near their places of residence. Southern sectors will be developed on line with the northern sectors and facilities like Banks, post offices, bus queue shelters for school students, modern parks etc will be provided in these sectors.
To ensure better facilities to government employees Chandigarh will be given Class a status. To ensure that local youth get jobs in Chandigarh a services selection board will be established in Chandigarh . All necessary steps will be taken to improve the law and order situation in Chandigarh . The administration will be made accountable to the citizens.

No More Village Land Will Be Acquired Forcefully: Jain

BJP Candidate from Chandigarh Parliamentary constituency Mr Satya Pal Jain today said the Congress party has not done anything for the villages of the Union Territory of Chandigarh and has actually hurt their interests by doling out false promises. Calling Congress an anti-village and anti-people party, Mr Jain said on coming to power at the centre BJP will ensure that no more village land is acquired forcefully, village laldora will be extended and houses built on own land outside laldora will be regularised.
Recalling that nine panchayats have been abolished in the Union territory of Chandigarh during the congress rule Mr Jain assured that BJP would not dissolve any panchayats. He promised that BJP would strengthen the panchayat system to ensure good governance in the villages. Addressing people during his padyatra of village Behlana Mr Jain said during its five year rule the congress party MP of Chandigarh has not fulfilled any of his promises and has betrayed every section of people.
In the afternoon Mr Jain performed padyatra in Markets of Sector 15 and Panjab University campus and listend to the problems of the shopkeepers and shoppers. He flagged off a Cycle Rally from the party office (KAMLAM), Sector 33-A. Chandigarh: It could qualify as a real rags-to-riches story with a lot of determination and guts thrown in. A strong contender for the Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former MP Satya Pal Jain has come a long way from being a newspaper hawker.
The quick-speaking Jain, 56, is one of the youngest and probably the most educated contestant among the main contenders in the poll fray in Chandigarh.
"I have my feet firmly on the ground as I still remember the days when I used to help my father in his small newspaper shop on the roadside. I have faced many difficulties in life and all the memories are still fresh in my mind," Jain said.
"These memories gave me motivation to work for people from downtrodden sections who are deprived of basic amenities," Jain said.
Jain was born in a lower middle-class family of a newspaper agent in Kharar town in Punjab.
Today, he is not only a BJP leader but a leading lawyer in constitutional, service and electoral law.
He is one of the lawyers of BJP's prime ministerial candidate L.K. Advani in the Babri Masjid demolition case before the Liberhan Commission and has also represented other BJP politicians such as M Venkaiah Naidu, Prem Kumar Dhumal and Navjot Singh Sidhu.
Jain, while narrating his difficult days, said: "I still remember the days when before going to school I had to reach our small newspaper shop in the wee hours to distribute newspapers. Then again I had to return to the shop after school hours to help my father in his work."
He added: "In 1965, my father had an attack of tuberculosis and I had to leave my studies completely for some time to look after our shop. At that moment I thought it was the end of my dreams, but somehow with the help of some family members and friends I managed to keep a balance between my studies and the shop."
Shashi Bala Jain, his wife, said: "When I look back, I feel proud to be his wife. He is a self-made man. Though there were infinite difficult times in our life he never compromised with his ideologies and principles."
Jain has been in politics since his student union days, when he was jailed for a year during the 1975-77 Emergency.
The Director of the Institute of Development and Communication, Chandigarh, Pramod Kumar - who is Jain's classmate and family friend - said: "Jain is a real fighter, his life is full of many ups and downs. The memories are still fresh in my mind when he was arrested during the Emergency days."
"Both of us had gone to take admission in the Law department at Panjab University (PU). Jain also had his name in the merit list but he was arrested right outside the administrative office," stated Kumar.
He added: "He had an option to leave the movement against Emergency to avoid the arrest and continue his studies. However, he left the studies and decided to go to jail."
Jain first contested elections from Chandigarh as a BJP candidate in 1991, when he was only 39, but lost by a margin of nearly 15,000 votes.
He, however, won the seat in the next elections in 1996 by defeating Congress candidate Pawan Kumar Bansal by a margin of around 25,000 votes. He won again in 1998 but lost in 2004 by over 40,000 votes to Bansal, who is now the union minister of state for finance.
The two are squaring off again in the Lok Sabha polls May 13, and Jain is using information technology for his election campaign this time.
"I am available on all the social networking sites like Orkut and Facebook. I have my own interactive website and blog that I update daily. I have mentioned all my works and future planning on my website. Anyone can leave his question there and I answer it at the earliest," he said.
Jain's determined rise in life is acknowledged even by his political opponents.
His main rival and sitting Chandigarh MP Bansal said: "It is very good that he has risen from such a humble background and I am happy about it. This proves the fact that democracy gives wings to the wingless and brings monarch to the road."

Jain was born in a lower middle-class family of a newspaper agent in Kharar town in Punjab, around 15 km from here.
Today, he is not only a BJP leader but a leading lawyer in constitutional, service and electoral law. He is one of the lawyers of BJP's prime ministerial candidate L K Advani in the Babri Masjid demolition case before the Liberhan Commission and has also represented other BJP politicians such as M. Venkaiah Naidu, Prem Kumar Dhumal and Navjot Singh Sidhu.
Jain, while narrating his difficult days, said: "I still remember the days when before going to school I had to reach our small newspaper shop in the wee hours to distribute newspapers. Then again I had to return to the shop after school hours to help my father in his work."
He added: "In 1965, my father had an attack of tuberculosis and I had to leave my studies completely for some time to look after our shop. At that moment I thought it was the end of my dreams, but somehow with the help of some family members and friends I managed to keep a balance between my studies and the shop."
Shashi Bala Jain, his wife, said: "When I look back, I feel proud to be his wife. He is a self-made man. Though there were infinite difficult times in our life he never compromised with his ideologies and principles."Jain has been in politics since his student union days, when he was jailed for a year during the 1975-77 Emergency.
Pramod Kumar, director of the Institute of Development and Communication, Chandigarh, who is Jain's classmate and family friend, said: "Jain is a real fighter, his life is full of many ups and downs. The memories are still fresh in my mind when he was arrested during the Emergency days."
"Both of us had gone to take admission in the Law department at Punjab University (PU). Jain also had his name in the merit list but he was arrested right outside the administrative office," stated Kumar.
He added: "He had an option to leave the movement against Emergency to avoid the arrest and continue his studies. However, he left the studies and decided to go to jail."
Jain first contested elections from Chandigarh as a BJP candidate in 1991, when he was only 39, but lost by a margin of nearly 15,000 votes.
He, however, won the seat in the next elections in 1996 by defeating Congress candidate Pawan Kumar Bansal by a margin of around 25,000 votes. He won again in 1998 but lost in 2004 by over 40,000 votes to Bansal, who is now the union minister of state for finance.
The two are squaring off again in the Lok Sabha polls May 13, and Jain is using information technology for his election campaign this time.
"I am available on all the social networking sites like Orkut and Facebook. I have my own interactive website and blog that I update daily. I have mentioned all my works and future planning on my website. Anyone can leave his question there and I answer it at the earliest," he said.
Jain's determined rise in life is acknowledged even by his political opponents.
His main rival and sitting Chandigarh MP Bansal said: "It is very good that he has risen from such a humble background and I am happy about it. This proves the fact that democracy gives wings to the wingless and brings monarch to the road."

BJP Candidate Satya Pal Jain Presents Education Agenda for Chandigarh at CRF Forum

Chandigarh (Mera Chandigarh): BJP candidate from Chandigarh parliamentary constituency, Satya Pal Jain, while expressing his view on education scenario on Chandigarh at Citizen’s Open Forum organised by citizen Research Foundation at Hotel Mountview on 24th April, 2009, announced his education agenda for Chandigarh.
According to Satya Pal Jain ‘great leaders and social reformists gave a lot of importance to education.’ But nowadays educational system in Chandigarh is diminishing day by day.
As the educational policies are being made without keeping the interest of children’s benefit. He also stated that the fees in private schools are exorbitant and unaffordable for the common man and in spite of the high fee; schools fail to provide quality education.
He emphasized that to improve an education system in Chandigarh; the parents have to come forward with such education forum and public discussions openly.
It is to mention here that Statistics and Citizen Research Foundation’s extensive survey and studies revealed that the middle class people are not voting because their main concern is education of their children and this is one issue which is overlooked every time. Very little is done to bring in changes in our Education system.

He went to file the nomination papers after paying obeisance at a number of Temples , Gurdwara’s and shrines of various religions and performing a Yajna at the party office. The places of worship he visited today included Sector 15 Gurdwara and Sanatana Dharm Mandir, Sector 34 Gurdwara, Saketri Shiv Mandir, Mansadevi temple, Jain Sthanak Sec17 Panchkula and Naugajapir. He rang up Ashram of Sant Asaram Bapu for his blessings and attended a prayer meeting in Sec 43 centre of Art of Living organisation.

The atmosphere at the BJP office before Mr Jain left the BJP office for filing his nomination at the head of a large procession to the office of Returning Officer in Sector 17 was upbeat and festive. His nomination was proposed by Mr Gur Pratap Singh Riar Member of SGPC, Ms Harjinder Kaur Former Mayor of Chandigarh , Mr Jai Ram Joshi Senior BJP leader and Mr Gurcharan Das Kala.
