According to senior citizens’ associations run across the country by Helpage India, it has been found that 82.5 per cent of the elderly have been affected adversely by the rise in prices over the last year and 92.4 per cent feel that the government has done nothing in this regard.

The lower and middle income groups have been hit the hardest. While 71.6 per cent senior citizens have cut down on their health expenditure, 40.8 per cent have curtailed the expense on their diets. Nearly 27.8 per cent people have witnessed tension/anxiety levels rise in their families, due to which their relationships have been strained. ..

Feb 07, 2010, Chandigarh: The city unit of Bharatiya Janata Party held a demonstration at the roundabout of Sector 7-8-18-19 on Saturday. Hundreds of party workers and leaders gathered and raised slogans against the increasing prices of essential commodities.

... Party workers tied black bands as a mark of protest and wore garlands of vegetables. Senior leaders of the party, while addressing the gathering, lambasted the Congress-led UPA government on its failure to control the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities.

Former MP Satya Pal Jain said the essential coordination required between different departments of the government appears to be lacking. “This is a time for action since the inflationary trends have caused enormous misery to the common man and the government is not taking any positive step to check the problem,” he said.

The BJP leaders said it was an alarming situation as the increase in the prices of food articles will also eventually impact the prices of manufactured items of common consumption. ...

The election was a smooth affair as over sixty delegates proposed the name of Khimi Ram over 70 out of a total of 88 delegates were present at the meeting, Vikram Thakur, State Returning officer said.

Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, State incharge of organisational affairs, Satya Pal Jain, co incharge, Om Prakash Dhankad and all Ministers and CPS, barring Industries Minister Krishan Kapoor and food and supplies Minister Romesh Dhawala were present at the meeting.
