BJP protests against contractor

Chandigarh, March 30: Activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party today lodged a protest against the electricity contractor for allegedly misbehaving with the public over inflated bills. At a demonstration held at Transport Chowk, the activists demanded the cancellation of the contract and burnt an effigy of the contractor.
        Maintaining that the contractor was charging exorbitant bills from the poor, the president of the BJP Labour Colony Cell, Mr Megh Raj Verma, said paying to a contractor was not acceptable to the residents.
        Referring to a police case which has been registered against the contractor, Mr Verma added that the poor people of the colony were being unnecessarily harassed by the contractor. A former Member of Parliament, Mr Satpal Jain, also participated in the protest and lashed out at the Congress for implementing wrong policies which did not favour the poor.

BJP Seeks Sonia's disqualification; petitions President

NEW DELHI, MARCH 23: Stepping up its offensive, BJP today petitioned President A P J Abdul Kalam seeking disqualification of Congress President Sonia Gandhi on grounds of holding an office of profit as Chairperson of National Advisory Council.
A four-member party delegation submitted the petition to the President's office seeking its early forwarding to the Election Commission and hoped an "impartial decision" would be taken....

... The BJP cited three of the Supreme Court judgements and the Shibu Soren case in its petition to the presidential secretariat, Jain said.
"It is not mentioned anywhere that the National Advisory Council (on the UPA's common minimum programme) is not an office of profit. In this case, a government notification clearly says that a chairperson of the National Advisory Council will be entitled to all facilities given to a (Cabinet Minister," he added.
The BJP, however, made no complaint against any others except Gandhi.
"This petition seeks disqualification of Sonia Gandhi only," Jain said.
He claimed Gandhi would face disqualification even if an Ordinance was passed with retrospective effect. ...

Sidhu files affidavit in HC

CHANDIGARH, MARCH 20: BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu today filed an affidavit in Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging the reply filed by the Punjab government in a case pertaining to the release of excise duty arrears which the state government allegedly owed to the Amritsar Municipal Corporation.
The Punjab government had earlier submitted before the court that it has already released the entire amount of Rs 148 crore to all the local bodies in the state of Punjab. ...

Sidhu, who was present in the court along with his counsel and former BJP MP Satya Pal Jain, also stated in his affidavit that he wrote two letters to mayor of the MC, Amritsar on March 4 asking him to clarify the actual position of payment of arrears by Punjab government to the MC, "but there was no response".

BJP activists burn effigy of UPA govt

Addressing the protesters, Mr Satya Pal Jain, a former MP, alleged that with the coming of the UPA government in power at the Centre the prices of essential commodities had skyrocketed . ....
