7,500 seek 'donor eyes' in UT

CHANDIGARH, Oct 24 — An estimated 2.2 million "donor eyes" were needed in the country. Last year only 15,000 "donor eyes" were available due to fewer donations. In Chandigarh nearly 175 transplant operations are done every year but almost 7,500 patients come up with demand every year.
Dr Jagjit S. Saini, vice-president of the Eye Association of India and Additional Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology, PGI, gave out these not-so-encouraging figures during the day-long public seminar "Eye care and eye donation" here today. ...

Discussion on price rise

CHANDIGARH, Oct 14 — The National Unity and Security Council will organise a discussion on price rise at Navjivan Bhavan in Sector 8, on October 18.
While Justice J. V. Gupta, a former Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, will be the guest of honour, the local MP, Mr Satya Pal Jain, will be the first guest speaker, according to a press note.

Demons go up in flames

CHANDIGARH, Oct 1 — The effigies of legendary demons— Ravana, Meghanada and Kumbhkarna — met their fiery ends, marking the victory of good over evil at several venues in the city today.
The occasion symbolised the culmination of the 10-day long Ramlila, a dramatisation of the epic, Ramayana, at 21 different places in the city. Demons who withstood the ire of the forces of Lord Rama for several days proved to "too docile" in their make-believe death on Thursday. ...

Jain on judicial reforms panel

CHANDIGARH, Sept 30: The local Member of Parliament, Satya Pal Jain, has been included as a member of the Home Ministry's 15-member Committee on Judicial Reforms constituted by the Parliament, which has former Union Minister Pranab Mukherjee as its chairman.
According to Jain, the committee among other things would examine the service conditions of judges in the Supreme Court and the High Court, besides those in the lower judiciary. Jain said that for the last many years the service conditions for those in the lower judiciary had not been improved, adding that the judges held positions under the Constitution and thus their salaries have to be different from the officials.
The committee would hold its first meeting on October 7 and submit its report toParliament. Among others who are also part of the committee include former Union Ministers Hans Raj Bhardwaj, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, former Bihar CM Jagannath Mishra, Abdul Ghaffur and Venkaiah Naidu.
