Jain hails move on Prasar Bharti

CHANDIGARH, Aug 30 — Mr Satya Pal Jain, local MP and whip of the BJP parliamentary party in the Lok Sabha, today welcomed the ordinance to amend the Prasar Bharti Act. He said the amendment would "restore real autonomy to the electronic media".
In a statement issued here, Mr Jain said the amendment would put into operation the original Act as passed by both Houses of Parliament in 1990. But the Congress government did not notify it until November, 1997. At the time of notification by the United Front government, drastic changes were made without getting the ordinance approved by any of the Houses of Parliament. Now Prasar Bharti shall be accountable to the Lok Sabha Committee represented by members of different political parties.
Mr Jain said the provision of maximum age of 65 years for the Chief Executive Officer was perfectly legal, valid and constitutional.

Suicide by student: Jain seeks probe

CHANDIGARH, Aug 23 — The local MP Mr Satya Pal Jain, today urged the Administration to hold an inquiry into the circumstances leading to the death of Pinky, a student of Government High School, Sector 38, who committed suicide yesterday after reportedly being scolded by her teacher.
In a letter to the UT Administrator, Mr Jain urged the administration to hold a probe by on impartial officer so that guilty could be punished and such incidents were not repeated in future.
Meanwhile, the girl was today cremated at the Sector 25 crematorium. The Parents Teachers Association of the school has condemned the statement of a political party calling for strike in the school.

Jain's stress on computer studies

CHANDIGARH, Aug 22 — The local MP Mr Satya Pal Jain has advised the students to opt for computer studies, as it were the computers that hold the key to success in the contemporary education scenario.
Mr Jain, who was addressing the students, after inaugurating a computer system in the Sector 39 Government Middle Model School, said today that knowledge of computers and science was essential for rising high in life.
In order to make the students computer literate, he was willing to donate more computers to various government and other recognised schools of the city out of his Local Area Development Fund, if these schools were keen on introducing computer studies as one of the subjects.
The function was attended by the president of the local unit of the Akali Dal, Mr Gurpartap Singh Riar, members of the Parent Teachers Association and municipal councillors.

IIC-type centre for Chandigarh

CHANDIGARH,Aug 22 — The city will soon have India International Centre (IIC) on the lines of the parent centre in the Union Capital.
To be constructed in Sector 15-A on Madhya Marg on a piece of land adjoining Punjab Congress Bhavan, the centre will be known as Braudlaugh Memorial India International Centre (BMIIC).
The Management Committee of the BMIIC comprises Adviser to the Administrator of Chandigarh; Chief Secretaries of Punjab and Haryana, Mr N.N. Vohra ( a senior bureaucrat and a representative of IIC, New Delhi); Mr Vijay Chopra (representing Braudlaugh Hall Memorial Trust); Mr Siddharath Shriram; Prof M.M. Puri (Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University), Mr R.K. Saboo (former chief of Rotary International), Mr Satya Pal Jain (local M.P.) and a few others. The Home Secretary of Chandigarh, Mrs Anuradha Gupta, is the Member Secretary of the Committee.

Teachers' strike:
A delegation of the teachers met the local MP, Mr Satya Pal Jain on Thursday and handed over him a copy of the letter which they had sent to Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee on the eve of the nationwide strike on August 10.
The delegation urged Mr Jain to impress upon the Central Government to arrive at a negotiated settlement with the striking teachers. ...

Saplings planted in college

CHANDIGARH, Aug 19 — A sapling plantation drive was carried out in Government College, Sector 46, here today. More than 100 saplings were planted on the occasion.
Mr Satya Pal Jain, Member of Parliament, inaugurated the function.
A similar drive was also organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Parishad as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the parishad. It has carried out plantation drives in Government College, Sector 11, GGS College, Sector 26, Dev Samaj College, Sector 45, GCG, Sector 42, and other educational institutions in the past fortnight.
The Build India Group organised a cultural programme at Government Girls High School, Sector 25, Mr Satya Pal Jain was the chief guest.

Parliamentary panel to study Bill

NEW DELHI: A 30-member joint parliamentary panel has been constituted to study the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill. Mr Satya Pal Jain, Mr Amrik Singh Aliwal, Mr Kishan Singh Sangwan, Mr K D Sultanpuri, and Mr Barjinder Singh Hamdard are among the MPs who are on the committee which is expected to submit its report during the next session of Parliament.

Transfer orders cancelled

CHANDIGARH, Aug 10 - The Union Finance Ministry has cancelled the transfer orders of Mr C.K. Vohra, Director Investigation of the Income Tax Department.
The ministry had ordered his transfer even before he had completed his tenure here. The local MP, Mr Satya Pal Jain, had taken up the case with the Union Finance Ministry on the plea that those involved in investigating special cases should not be transferred so as not to jeopardise further investigations.
Mr Vohra had conducted raids on engineers, contractors and suppliers of the Engineering Department of the Administration in November last year. The raids led to revelation of large amount of undisclosed sources of income besides exposing the alleged nexus between engineers on the one hand and suppliers and contractors on the other.

Admn urged to hold gram panchayat poll

CHANDIGARH, AUGUST 9: The local MP, Mr Satya Pal Jain, has urged the Chandigarh Administration to hold elections to gram panchayats, panchayat samiti, zila parishad and market committees without any further delay.
In a letter written to the Adviser to the Administrator, Mr Jagdish Sagar, the MP said elections to these bodies were due since long and the electorate did not want any more delay.
In the neighbouring state of Punjab, elections to all these bodies had already been conducted and there was no valid justification for delaying elections in Chandigarh. ...

Jain moots advisory panel for region

CHANDIGARH, Aug 8 — Mr Satya Pal Jain, local MP has suggested setting up a joint advisory committee of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh for integrated coordinated development of Chandigarh and its periphery.
He was speaking at the concluding session of a two-day seminar on future of Chandigarh here yesterday.
Mr Jain said because of shrinking land, the concept of multi-storeyed flats has to be encouraged to meet the growing housing demand. He also advocated an increase in covered area from the present 50 per cent.
Mr Jain also demanded revoking of the Periphery Control Order. The Administration should make amendments to allow construction of second and third storeys in buildings where initially only single storey was permitted. The Administration should also not ignore those living in slums and rehabilitation colonies while planning future urban estates and areas, he said.

Jain appointed president

CHANDIGARH, Aug 5 — Mr Vijay Malhotra, President of the Archery Association of India has appointed Mr Satya Pal Jain, MP, president of the ad hoc committee of the Chandigarh Archery Association. Mr Ravinder Talwar has been made general secretary.
He further authorised both of them to sit together and nominate other office-bearers of the CAA. This arrangement would be replaced by regular elections within six months, he added.

Colourful parade by school children

CHANDIGARH, Aug 1 (Agencies) — More than 25,000 schoolchildren drawn from different schools of the city today held a colourful cultural programme to formally mark the launching of fortnight-long functions of the closing ceremony of the golden jubilee celebrations of India's Independence.
The programme was organised by the Education Department of the Chandigarh Administration and the Independent School Association.

Allot land to societies: Jain

CHANDIGARH, July 31 — The local MP Mr Satya Pal Jain, has urged the Chandigarh Administration to allot land to cooperative house building societies immediately.
Mr Jain raised the issue in the Lok Sabha yesterday where he stated that Chandigarh which was being ruled by the union government faced an acute shortage of residential accommodation.
The Administration had in the past allotted land to cooperative house building societies. Now that the Administration has decided to allot land to societies for construction of multi-storeyed flats, for which an initial deposit has been made, no steps have been taken by the Chandigarh Housing Board to allot land to eligible societies. Keeping in view the rising cost of construction, any delay in the allotment of land is making it difficult for the societies to construct their dwelling units, Mr Jain said.
He sought the intervention of the union government so that the Administration could be pressurised in alloting the land to the societies
